The first part of the Fifteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15 CBD) took part last week both virtually and physically in Kunming, China, and produced only preliminary results. The final and key decisions on the “Post-2020 global biodiversity framework” are expected to be taken in the second part of COP15 in May 2022, when hopefully all parties can meet on-site with their full delegations. The 30×30 Goal, already supported by more than 70 nations, to protect 30% of the global land and sea space representing the different ecosystems and habitats, by 2030, should still be a central part of the agenda.

On the way to this second part of COP15 CBD, there will certainly be many more fora taking place with more concrete discussions, HOW the 30×30 Goal can be achieved. One, which LT&C can recommend to join and is involved, is a  2-day virtual conference, organised by Coastal Quest, on “Achieving 30×30 for Our Coasts, Oceans, and Communities”, November 9th and 10th, 2021, 9:00 am – 1:30 pm PST/ 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm CET. This conference will explore the 30×30 movement to protect 30% of coasts and oceans by 2030, reversing the negative impacts of biodiversity decline and climate change.

Participation is for free, and to register for the conference and for more information, please visit the conference WEBSITE.

Conference Attendees will Gain Insight into:

  • Global, US, and State priorities and approaches to sustain shifts in political will, marry complementary efforts across multiple scales, and achieve the goal
  • Cases studies of indigenous and community-driven efforts to protect coastal and ocean biodiversity
  • Importance of building effective partnerships
  • Best practices and lessons learned to build community and private sector support and coalitions
  • Designing and financing cost-effective siting processes and long-term funding for management

While the first day focuses on the US, the second day does on Achieving 30×30 Around the Globe Featured Speakers include
