The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of LT&C will be held June 10, 2021, 14:00 – 17:00 CEST by Zoom. LT&C-members will receive the Zoom-Link a few days prior to the meeting. Few members will meet physically in Arendal, Norway.
In the morning of the same day (presumably 9:00-13:00) we are planning a webinar on the future Germany-engagement of LT&C. This meeting is likely to be held in German, and invitations will be sent to German-speaking members and partners. A planning meeting for this event will be scheduled for May 4:
Germany to galvanize the tourism industry as lead partner and pioneering force for the 30X30 Biodiversity Goal
Background: Germany is a world champion in tourism and a promoter of the 30X30 goal. As a member – within the EU – of the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People, Germany aims to encourage all Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) to agree to a new goal (GBF target 2?) at COP15: to achieve by 2030 a global protected area network covering30% of the world’s terrestrial and marine surface including representative parts of various ecosystems and habitats. Tourism which depends on and benefits from intact natural areas has considerable potential to support and implement this important goal. There are few other countries with a similar promising and diverse landscape of sustainable-, eco- or nature-based tourism initiatives, organizations, institutions, and businesses. Germany could take the lead in showcasing credible (LT&C-) examples where tourism supports the growth in number, size, and quality of protected areas. With its experienced development cooperation agencies, it could also assist other countries in setting such standards.
The topic for LT&C at the workshop (and for the future cooperation with NNL?), therefore, will be working with the questions:
- What kind of projects are needed, to make tourism a supportive factor for reaching the 30X30 goal (in Germany and, through technical cooperation, other countries)?
- Which critical players would be interested in such projects and should become ideal partner(s)?
- Which development agencies and donors could be interested in financing such projects, and which sustainable funding models can be developed?
